Agile Coaching Lab

For the past few years, I have been trying to develop an Agile mindset and learn the art and craft of Agile coaching. I joined many meetups in this pursuit. Every meetup was a great opportunity to learn more about Agile Coaching and Agile mindset as well as the chance to network with professional agile coaches including Jakub.

Although I learned a lot from those meetups, they were a few pieces of a large puzzle. To enhance my knowledge of Agile Coaching, I decided to join the Agile Coaching Lab run by Jakub Jurkiewicz. I must say that it has been a true eye-opener for me. An extensive 9-week program with each week touching on some aspect of agile coaching competency. We are in week 6 of the program and below are few reflections from what I have learned from the course so far.

Agile Coach’s role is not permanent, the primary goal of Agile Coach is to transform the team into a cohesive high-performance self-managing unit. Agile Coaches can take a variety of roles in helping the team become self-managing including a coach, teacher, mentor, and facilitator but the coach performs all these as a servant to the team with no authority. Creating a safe space is fundamental for a team to be high-performing. The agile coach can have a wide range of tools and techniques at their disposal but the usage of those tools and techniques is not just driven by the situation but also with the people involved.

During this, I was also introduced to a range of tools and techniques including Powerful Questions and Emotional Culture deck, and many others. The powerful questions alone can go a long way in helping the coach support the teams in their self-management journey. Simple to use but difficult to master, it was a great opportunity to use it during our coaching dojo.

In short, I am glad that I decided to enroll in this program as it helped me understand the role of Agile Coach and what is the true value that Agile Coach brings to the table. Agile Coaching is a vast area and it can take many years to learn part of it, but joining this program is one step that will go a long way in my pursuit of developing myself as an Agile Coach.
